1. Do hair transplants really work?
Hair transplants really work because the transplant is from one part of the skin surface to another area on the same individual (an AUTO-GRAFT). There can be no rejection.
2. Do the results of a hair transplant look natural?
Today’s micrografting technique creates such natural results that you can’t tell the difference between the transplanted hairs and any original surrounding hairs.
3. What causes hair loss?
Hair loss is strictly genetic. Male hormone (testosterone) must be present for genetic baldness to develop (eunuchs, castrated before hair loss starts, will never lose their scalp hair).
4. Is this type of specialty a subspecialty of dermatology, and is it done as a fellowship post-residency?
Hair transplantation can be performed by anyone with a medical license. Traditionally, transplant physicians were usually dermatologists, but with the changing medical economy, more non-dermatologists have entered this field, as well as in other cosmetic specialties. No post-residency training is required, but many introductory courses and advanced seminars are available.
5. Is there any scarring?
There is scarring, but new techniques can minimize the scar that results from removal of grafts from the back of the head. There is no visible scarring in the scalp that receives the transplants.
6. I have a medical condition; can I still receive a hair transplant?
There are very few medical reasons that a person cannot have a hair transplant. If they have medical problems that are controlled with medication, as long as they feel well, they should be a candidate. The transplant procedure is not very challenging from a medical standpoint.
